Last week we were featured on the American Express Open Forum blog. This is a site dedicated to small businesses. We were excited to be featured in their article 7 Reasons to Rethink Using Free Online Tools.
People often forget that not only are we entertainers, but we’re also running a business. I would say that 80% of our time is spent with administrative related tasks. The other 20% is spent actually performing.
I work from multiple computers, a smart phone, and occasionally a tablet. The idea of having all of our essential business forms and documents in one spot really appealed to me. That’s why I REALLY wanted Google Docs to work.
It was a disaster. Truthfully, I’m not sure who Google Docs is really aimed at. It’s like a crippled version of a real office suite. Apple’s iWork suite for the iPad is more capable than Google Doc’s, and that’s saying something!
I ended up settling on Dropbox. It keeps the latest versions of all my forms in sync and has apps that allow me to get my files on mobile devices. I’m still stuck using Microsoft Office, but at least I don’t have three different versions of all my files on various computers.
If you run a small business, the stuff over at the American Express Open Forum is like pure gold. Basically it’s like being able to peer into the heads of other small business owners and discovering what’s working for them and what’s not.
Plus, Guy Kawasaki is over there! His writing alone is worth the visit.
Anyway, check out the full article when you get the chance. Most of our business tools are online simply because it’s more practical for us. If you know of a good service I should be looking at, let me know!
