Somebody Please! Please Make It Stop!

My retinas burn…

Soon my eyes will be replaced with scorched cavities, turning my world into permanent darkness. My last vision is something so horrifying that I can’t lance it from my memory, no matter how hard I try…

Small children begin to cry in utter terror. Faces from every direction are scrunched up in agony. The universe itself whimpers at the magnitude of the tragedy.

Only a magician could dress this badly…

The Three Minute Phone Call That Changed Everything…

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

Yellow Telephone

“No. No. H*ll no. We don’t want a magician. We went down that path last year. We’re not going to get taken again!”

I look at my phone. The call timer shows eight seconds. I’ve never spoken to this guy in my life. It’s the first time I’ve called him.

This is going to be interesting.

Is Magic Just a Waste of Time?

Young Magician

Recently we met a young man who is very excited about magic. He’s anxious to learn more about the art! As I talked with him I was impressed at how much he had been able to learn independently.

After a few minutes I turned to his mother and said “Wow! It’s so nice that your son has taken such an interest in magic!”

She looked at me and said “For you maybe!”

Apparently she was less than thrilled with her son’s interest in the art of magic. It was a source of embarrassment to her. She wanted nothing more than for her son to “grow up” and “give up” his interest…

Pack Flat. Play Flat.

Flat Tire

The mantra of most magicians is “Pack Flat, Play Big!”

To a certain extent that’s true. The two sides of our business are always at odds. There are a lot of things we’d like to do creatively, but there’s only so much equipment we’re able to haul.

The problem is, that this ideology has given birth to the “suitcase show”. The idea is that your entire act should fit into a single suitcase that you haul to the show, set on its side, and perform directly from.

Almost all of the magic community has gone to this.

It’s sickening.

Have I Seen This Act Before? It’s Deja Vu!

Friday, February 18th, 2011

I’ve watched a TON of magic acts.

It comes with the territory of my profession. I have to know what’s out there and what everyone else is doing.

I’ve seen many entertainers perform multiple times over the years. It’s always interesting to see how much, or how little they change their acts.

In many cases I see guys who are so used to doing “their thing” that an astroid shower could rain down upon the audience and they’d keep plowing forward!

It’s the same tricks done the same way with the same jokes. Year after year… Sometimes I can mouth along with their routines!

I’m not here to criticize anyone, but… Do these guys get repeat customers?

Here are 5 things you should know about our pricing.

The Cruelest of Words

Saturday, February 12th, 2011

The other day I was at a strolling engagement. If you’re not familiar with strolling magic, it’s where the magician mingles with the crowd and performs small illusions that happen in the spectators hands.

I just finished one of my favorite pieces. Jaws dropped and eyes popped. It’s one of those moments where everyone is too stunned to speak for a couple seconds because they can’t believe what just happened!

Afterward one woman turned to a young child and said “It’s just a trick. There’s no real magic in the world!”

That statement broke my heart.

What Percy Jackson and Magic on Video Have in Common!

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

I have a confession to make…

There’s one thing in this world that I love more than magic.

It’s books.

Right now I’m reading “The Lost Hero” by Rick Riordan. Yes, it’s young adult fiction. Yes, I’m loving it. No, I really don’t care what you think of me!

It’s written by the same guy who wrote the Percy Jackson books, which are also excellent. “The Lost Hero” takes place in the same universe, but features different main characters.

Like many others I was really disappointed by the movie adaption of Percy’s first book. I never really understood why. It just fell… Flat.

The basic story was left mostly intact. The characters were (mostly) all there. What was the problem?
