Bystanders Can Stop Over 50% of Bullying Incidents

Staying on top of the latest academic research on bullying is important to us. In my research I discovered a study that absolutely startled me.

Although successful bullying programs remain important accomplishments, Ttofi and Farrington (2011) found that few programs specifically target the behavior of bystanders (i.e., an individual who witnesses bullying). As such, prevention programs deemphasize a population that constitutes between 60% and 70% of primary or secondary school students (Glew, Fan, Katon, Rivara, & Kerntic, 2005; Rivers, Poteat, Noret, & Ashurst, 2009).

This program oversight is unfortunate because observational research has found that when bystanders intervene on behalf of the victim, they successfully abate victimization more than 50% of the time. (Craig, Pepler, & Atlas, 2000; O’Connell et al., 1999)

The remainder of the article talks about research they did on bystander behavior. Their conclusions were that bystanders have a crucial role in preventing bullying. They also concluded that it’s not enough to simply define what a bystander is. We need to encourage students to take a stand. (more…)

Picture of piggy bank with dollar bill. White sign with word insurance written on it.

It’s that time again! Everyone’s heading back to school. It’s a fresh new year filled with opportunities and possibilites!

As you’re planning out this year’s school assembly programs, there’s something I want you to think about.

Does the presenter you’re hiring carry liability insurance?

This is probably something you’ve never thought about. You have a lot of presentations to choose from. Many of them don’t carry any kind of insurance.

I’m not trying to be negative towards other programs. I just want you to make informed decisions for your school. (more…)

Based on the media coverage, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the bullying epidemic is limited to the United States and United Kingdom.

It’s not… Bullying is a global problem and needs a global movement. This isn’t a national problem or a cultural problem. It’s a human problem.

A Thanksgiving Message About Bullying

Girl leaning against brick wall

As I write this it’s Thanksgiving Day. It’s a time for us to count our blessings and remember the things we’re thankful for.

It’s a day filled with joy and happiness… Which made one of the headlines in our local newspaper even more gut wrenching. A local student took his life after being bullied.
